About this wine
GAFFY AND NEAL Merricks North Chardonnay, Mornington Peninsula
Gaffy & Neal is a collaboration between Darrin Gaffy (Principia, Mornington Peninsula) and Douglas Neal (Paradise IV, Geelong). With a duo like that, your expectations should be quite high and will be well met. Doug, who we welcomed to Langton’s HQ recently, is a Giaconda alum and sourced that Penfolds Chardonnay clone they use to make their cult Beechworth wine.
He’s done it again. This time in the Mornington alongside the indefatigable Darrin Gaffy whose nuanced work in the vineyard is writ large over his wines. The pair have muscled in on the top-end Mornington Chardonnay scene with a stunning cuvee. On the palate, even at this young age, it's dynamic; a living wine. Give this ingenue time and it will reward you to such an extent that you will regret not going long.

Jeremy Oliver
A true vin de gard and a timely slap in the face for the makers and critics who believe it’s impossible to have chardonnay with both finesse and flavour. Piercing aromas of ruby grapefruit, peach and nectarine knit with a subdued presence of nutty oak and creamy yeast-derived influences, cinnamon and ginger.
Translucently clear, it’s vivacious and voluminous, with an explosive flash of fruit that eases down a fine, powdery spine towards a brittle, savoury finish wrapped in mouthwatering acids. Superb shape and style – the new Peninsula benchmark.
97 points, Jeremy Oliver.

A luminescent hue tinged with green, boding well. Riffs on honeydew melon, mirabelle & orange blossom. As at Giaconda, where maker Doug Neal worked, this is all Penfolds P-58 clone, a missile of intense flavor. 11 mths. in high quality new & used oak that Neal, a purveyor of French barrels these days, designed bespoke. Long, streamlined & stamped with maritime salinity.
95 points, Ned Goodwin MW.

Jeni Port
Merricks North offers a look at the other side of the Gaffy & Neal Chardonnay coin with obvious clean cut and thrust, not to mention purity and precision. Structure is keen, offering the background to bright green apple, citrus, white peach, nectarine, mango skin, almond meal and a splash of kaffir lime spiciness. The defining personality is one of mouth-wateringly good drinking now, but with so much more to offer given time. That delightful acid line is the key. Its enduring persistence elevates the fruit while providing some serious zip and tang. The oak is just so, adding to what is some serious class. It’s quite the charmer.
