About this wine

GAJA Sperss, Barolo DOCG

Gaja’s Sperss is a definitive expression of Serralunga d'Alba. The name, Piedmontese for "nostalgia," reflects Angelo Gaja’s decades-long ambition to reclaim his family’s roots in the Barolo zone. Sourced from a 12-hectare amphitheatre in the Marenca-Rivette subzone, the site is characterised by its heavy, limestone-rich clay soils. This terroir produces a Nebbiolo of significant power and longevity, distinct from the more perfumed styles of Barolo’s western communes.

The winemaking process focuses on structural integrity. Following fermentation in stainless steel, the wine undergoes a dual ageing regime: 12 months in barriques, followed by 18 months in large traditional oak casks. This method integrates the tannins while preserving the primary fruit and mineral character of the Serralunga fruit.

Sperss is noted for its muscularity and depth. The nose delivers a concentrated core of black cherry, tar, and leather, layered with notes of truffle and dried herbs. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied with a dense, firm tannic structure and a long, savoury finish. It is a benchmark Barolo designed for the cellar, typically reaching its peak after a decade of ageing.

ABOUT THE WINERY
Gaja

Gaja

Founded in 1859 by Giovanni Gaja, this prestigious wine estate has been handed down through five generations of the Gaja family. Fourth generation Angelo Gaja is the estate’s current owner. Gaja has 110 ha of vineyard holdings in Tuscany (Montalcino, Castagneto and Bolgheri) and Piedmont (Barbaresco and Barolo). Acquired in 1994 by the Gaja family, Gaja Pieve Santa Restituta is an estate in Brunello di Montalcino. The name refers to the Pieve or Parish Church of Saint Restituta located on the property. The 17.6 ha vineyard is located in the south-west subzone of the appellation on white, rocky soils, which over the years has proven to produce some of the region’s finest wines. A second vineyard of 11 ha was bought on the north-eastern sub-zone in 2006. Pieve Santa Restituta produces a classic, blended Brunello di Montalcino and two vineyard-designated wines, Brunello di Montalcino Sugarille and Brunello di Montalcino Rennina.
