GIACONDA Shiraz, Beechworth 2005 Magnum
About this wine
Giaconda Shiraz Beechworth
Giaconda Shiraz comes from a single site high in the foothills of the Victorian Alps, where Rick Kinzbrunner has worked since the 1980s to produce one of Australia’s most distinctive cool-climate Shiraz expressions. The granite soils, altitude and natural balance of the vineyard shape a style closer in structure to northern Rhône than the Barossa, though its Australian identity remains clear. The fruit is hand-picked and fermented with some whole bunches, before being aged in a mix of French oak, including large-format casks and barriques. The wine typically shows dark plum and blackberry fruit, savoury spice, and a graphite edge, with firm but well-integrated tannin and a long, dry finish. Bottle age brings out game, smoke and olive tapenade complexity. Released only after extended élevage and bottling ageing at the estate, this is a serious cellar candidate, with strong demand from collectors both in Australia and internationally.
