GIROLAMO RUSSO Feudo di Mezzo Nerello Mascalese, Etna 2018 Bottle
About this wine
Girolamo Russo Feudo di Mezzo is a concentrated and complex Etna Rosso with exciting intensity. It is a single vineyard Nerello made from vines over a century old in one of Etna’s prime contrada. The fruit is dark and brooding, with velvety tannins and a voluptuous mouthfeel balanced with harmonious acidity.
In 2005, Giuseppe Russo was drawn back to his childhood home on Sicily’s Mount Etna to make wine. Named after his late father, he creates elegant and expressive wines that speak of the volcano’s incredibly varied terroir. The crus (or ‘contrade’) in which Russo grows his grapes are among the finest on Etna’s north side, and he conducts all of his production organically.

James Suckling
Tight nose, yielding floral, crushed red-fruit notes, clean earth and a hint of mild spice. Medium-bodied with brighter berries, citrus peel and spice on the palate, thanks to vivid acidity. A slight grip on the finish pulls it up a bit short for now. Should even out with another year in bottle. Try at the end of 2021.
91 points, James Suckling.

Eric Guido
The 2018 Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo captivates with a spicy bouquet that blends dusty rose, allspice and clove with sour cherries. Its textures are silky and pliant, showing a pleasant inner sweetness, balanced by bright acidity and a perfumed display of red berries and licorice. While lightly structured, the 2018 is already easy to like as it tapers off long with a mix of blueberry skins and balsam herbs.
91 points, Eric Guido, Vinous.

Decanter
The Feudo di Mezzo vineyards sit at 670m above sea level on the northern slopes of Mount Etna. The 80- to 100-year-old bush-trained vines are planted in volcanic/sandy soils rich in minerals. This wine opens up over time - initial notes of minerals and iron give way to wild strawberries and warm spice, becoming headily perfumed with violet and iris aromas. The lively palate balances bright, tangy redcurrant fruits with a nervy, taut acidity.
95 points, Susan Hulme MW, Decanter.
Etna and its chief variety Nerello Mascarese is often compared to Nebbiolo with Mediterranean swagger. Think scents of camphor and liquorice strap melded to kirsch and a waft of the garrigue, all in one. Think a spindly latticework of tannins and bright acidity that defy the region’s deep southern location by virtue of a magical confluence, volcanic soils and altitude. There is no better exemplar of these virtues than Girolamo Russo. Each wine, an embodiment of a different sciara, or lava flow. Each sciara, the foundation of a different contrada, or single sub-region.
Set on the north slope of the mountain, at an altitude of 650-780 metres above sea-level, the winery’s vineyards cover 18 hectares, surrounded by hazelnut and olive groves.
Re-established by Giuseppe Russo in 2005, and dedicated to the memory of his father Girolamo, the winery is a powerful expression of Giuseppe’s desire to respect and conserve his family’s traditional values, but interpreting those values in a new and personal way, introducing and developing new approaches to winemaking, but remaining in the village of his birth, Passopisciaro – the centre of the recent renaissance in the great red wines of Etna.
