About this wine
Haut Bailly II, 2nd wine of Château Haut-Bailly, Pessac-Léognan
Haut Bailly II is the second wine of Château Haut-Bailly in the Pessac-Léognan appellation. As the younger sibling of the renowned Château Haut-Bailly, Haut Bailly II encapsulates the estate's commitment to quality and tradition.
Situated in the revered Pessac-Léognan terroir, the vineyards are blessed with gravelly soils and an ideal climate, making it conducive to cultivating predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot and Cabernet Franc.
The production of Haut Bailly II mirrors the meticulous attention to detail found in Château Haut-Bailly. However, it is crafted to be approachable and enjoyable at a younger age while still showcasing the elegance and characteristics of its parent estate. The resulting wine exudes flavours of red and black fruits, refined tannins, and a well-balanced structure.
Haut Bailly II offers enthusiasts an opportunity to experience a taste of Château Haut-Bailly's legacy, delivering a true essence of the Pessac-Léognan appellation in every glass.

The 2020 Haut-Bailly II is super elegant and refined, with tons of aromatic nuance and character. Succulent dark cherry, rose petal, dried herbs and menthol lend energy to this super-classy Pessac-Léognan. The energy, precision and nuance here are superb. Perhaps more importantly, Haut-Bailly II does not come across as a wine from a warm year at all.

A blend of 54% Merlot and 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2020 Haut-Bailly II has a deep garnet-purple color. It rolls effortlessly out of the glass with rambunctious notes of crushed blackberries, warm blackcurrants, and juicy plums, plus suggestions of clove oil, unsmoked cigars, and fragrant soil. Medium to full-bodied, the palate offers velvety tannins and seamless freshness to match the expressive black fruits, finishing long and spicy.

The 2020 Haut-Bailly II bides its time in the glass, that flourishes with blackberry, shucked oyster shells, pressed iris flower and a touch of graphite. This is classy. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, gentle grip, fine tannins, smooth and cohesive with a generous sprinkling of black pepper towards the finish. This leaves the tongue tingling long after the wine has departed - a serious Deuxième Vin.

Intense cassis, prune and fig fruits, this has juice and balance but is serious in character, with slate and crayon notes, peony flowers, and clear ageing potential. 30% new oak, harvest September 9 to 25. Vinified in the old winery but all ageing took place in the stunning new cellars with their underground barrel ageing area. 30% of overall production in HBII.

The 2020 Haut-Bailly II, which was harvested all in September, offers everything you’d want from a second wine and has up-front red and black fruits, some tobacco, floral, spicy, sandalwood nuances, medium-bodied richness, and a layered, silky mouthfeel. It has plenty of the class and elegance found in the Grand Vin, yet in a more approachable, undeniably delicious package. It’s perfect for drinking over the coming decade.
