A bright and brilliant Shiraz from Frankland River. Dominant chalky iron stone and slightly rusty nail characters are a strong statement of the region. It’s a firmer style of Shiraz with fine sinewy tannins and plenty of oak harmonising and integrating. Lovely mix of spicy licorice with a blue fruit and dark plum influence. Excellent wine now or for extend cellaring.

Inky, dark and opaque in the glass. Lifted aromas of nutty, sweet oak, boysenberry, mulberry, graphite, mocha and a whiff of eucalyptus. Full flavoured, muscular, dark fruited and rich on the palate, lashings of sweet satsuma plum, dark cherry, oak and spice. Firm tannins and bright acidity bring plenty of mouth-feel and brightness. Built for the long haul.

Three of the four cornerstone wines from Houghton are named after the three British officers who formed a syndicate in 1836 and purchased the historic property in the Swan Valley: Lieutenant Colonel Richmond Houghton, Thomas Yule and Charles William Ferguson. They called the property Houghton, after the commanding officer. Thomas Yule managed the property during the first planting of vines. Interestingly, this Shiraz is not sourced from the Swan Valley but is from Frankland River, some 325 kilometers south. This 2020 Thomas Yule Shiraz is an interesting iteration of this wine, as it is possessed of more tannin than it is fruit concentration. Although bold in flavor, it is far more sedate than previous vintages, but whether this is a good or bad things remains to be seen. Elegant, but firm. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
