Josef Chromy Zdar Chardonnay Tasmania

Zdar represents the absolute selection from Josef Chromy’s estate in Northern Tasmania. Named after the founder’s Czech birthplace, this cuvée is only produced in exceptional years where the Relbia vineyard yields fruit of sufficient power and acidity. For the Australian collector, it serves as a benchmark for cool-climate Chardonnay, balancing Tasmanian freshness with the structural weight required for long-term cellaring.

In the cellar, Chief Winemaker Jeremy Dineen employs traditional techniques to build complexity. The fruit is hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed directly into French oak barriques. Fermentation relies on indigenous yeasts, followed by a period of maturation on lees with regular stirring. This process integrates the oak and develops the wine's characteristic texture without masking the primary fruit.

The nose is defined by white stone fruit, lemon curd, and a distinct flinty note. On the palate, expect a drive of citrus acidity supported by flavours of roasted hazelnuts and nectarine. The finish is dry, precise, and exceptionally long.
