Josef Chromy Zdar Pinot Noir represents the pinnacle of winemaking at this northern Tasmanian estate. Named after the Czech hometown of the founder, this flagship release is produced exclusively from top-tier parcels of fruit grown in the cool climate of the Tamar Valley. The wine honours the journey of its founder and represents the ultimate expression of the vineyard site.
Chief winemaker Ockie Myburgh employs traditional techniques to craft this limited bottling, including selective whole-bunch fermentation to build structure and aromatics. Maturation takes place in 228-litre French oak barriques, which ensures the integration of tannins without masking the natural purity of the cool-climate fruit.
The nose delivers aromas of dark cherry, wild strawberry and exotic spice, alongside complex undercurrents of earth and leaf litter. On the palate, the wine presents sleekly proportioned red fruit flavours, supported by mineral acidity and super-powdery, structured tannins, ensuring excellent cellaring potential.

Josef Chromy
Czechoslovakian born Josef Chromy fled his war torn home to Tasmania, setting up the successful Blue Ribbon Meat products. After selling that venture, he went on to establish and re-invigorate wineries and vineyards in Northern Tasmania, including the prestigious sites of Heemskerk and Rochecombe and Tamar Valley Wines before setting up Josef Chromy Wines. The winery is found just South of Launceston in Relbia, Northern Tasmania producing high quality cool climate fruit from Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris and Sauvignon Blanc. Josef Chromy has three ranges; the everyday drinking fruit driven Pepik, Josef Chromy Reserve Range, highlighting individual site expression and Zdar featuring limited wines from outstanding sites in exceptional vintages.
