About this wine
KRUG 171st Edition , Champagne
Krug's 171st Edition is a masterclass in patience and precision, composed around the 2015 harvest and built from 131 wines across 12 years. Each parcel was vinified separately in small oak barrels, a hallmark of Krug's approach, allowing the Cellar Master to blend with extraordinary nuance. Reserve wines, some dating back to 2000, bring layers of maturity and complexity that define the Krug style.
On the nose, there's toasted brioche, citrus zest, dried fruit and hazelnut. The palate follows with richness and tension in equal measure, a fine thread of acidity framing flavours of apple, honey and spice. The texture is both full and finely knit, finishing with persistence that marks the house at its best. Each Edition captures a moment in time while speaking eloquently of the Krug philosophy: the individuality of plots, meticulous blending, and the pursuit of absolute harmony.Wine Details

I went to a Champagne lunch the other day. The day that was probably the warmest on record in July in Sydney. Champagne lunch felt like the right choice on that glorious 24+C winter afternoon. Don’t mind if I do. It was a lunch of not only great wine but also a great company of women that pursue the finest French bubble. Somehow, I went on about my love for sparkling Shiraz… and nobody threw me out. It was also nice to meet Clémence Krug, who generously shared the Grande Cuvée 171ème Édition. I thought I might pop a note, as the wine was glorious as the sun on that balmy winter day in Sydney.
Due diligence: Krug iD 122003, 45% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay, 18% Meunier, composed around the harvest of 2015. Julie Cavil is the Cellar Master now and she was around when this was made.
Such a complete wine. It pushes flavour to the corners of the mouth. Complex and detailed. It’s a wholesome experience. Fine gentle mousse but firm enough to keep your palate energised. It smells of salted shortbread, quince and croissant with almond cream. Then nougat and razor-sharp acidity. Crème brûlée and salt flakes. Crunchy almonds and limey acidity. Oyster shell with lemon, the mineral note. Complete balance. And it’s long and delightful. I forgot about sparkling Shiraz for a moment. On that balmy winter day in Sydney.

The NV Grande Cuvée 171ème Édition, based on the 2015 vintage, is every bit as impressive as it was the last time I tasted it. Creamy, layered and resonant, the 171 is seriously impressive. The style is one that favors tension over volume. Lemon peel, white flowers and white pepper open first. Hints of marzipan, tangerine peel and spice add an exotic flair to this mid-weight, understated Grand Cuvée. Floral notes and bright acids perk up the finish. The 171 is wonderfully fresh and vibrant from start to finish. The blend is 45% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay and 18% Meunier, vintages 2015 through 2000. Krug ID: 122013. Disgorged: Winter: 2021-2022.

Decanter
Two years on from its disgorgement, this 2015-based edition has settled beautifully, showing all the sunniness of the base year with its mandarin and apricot plushness, surprisingly smooth and silky up front before settling into its broad, inviting range of praline, cappuccino and bitter almond aromatics and subtle fruit skin chewiness. It's a punchy, fulsome edition thanks to the base year's intensity, but it has been beautifully tamed into a characteristically suave and multilayered Grande Cuvée. A blend of 131 wines, with reserves back to the year 2000.

Spanning from 1998 through the 2015 vintage, the NV Champagne Grande Cuvée 171 is lush with a kaleidoscope of aromas including orange marmalade, toasted brioche, almond, and ripe peaches. Full-bodied and rounded, it has a hint of warmth on the finish, but it’s highly attractive, balanced, and long, with outstanding depth and richness. This fantastic expression of the Grand Cuvée is gorgeous right out of the gate and will be a great addition for collectors to enjoy over the coming two decades. Drink 2023-2043.
