Kumeu River Wines Estate Chardonnay, Auckland

Kumeu River has long been the standard-bearer for New Zealand Chardonnay, frequently outperforming Burgundy’s finest in blind tastings. Located just north of Auckland, the estate benefits from a cool maritime climate and heavy clay soils. These conditions allow the Brajkovich family to produce a wine defined by its restraint and balance rather than over-extraction. The winemaking remains traditional, focusing on fruit purity. The grapes are whole-bunch pressed and fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak barriques, roughly 20% of which are new. The wine undergoes full malolactic fermentation, adding weight without sacrificing its characteristic acidity. It is aged for eleven months on lees, resulting in a structured wine built for the cellar.

The nose delivers white peach, hazelnut, and a hint of flinty reduction. On the palate, the wine is tight and focused, showing citrus pith and stone fruit flavours supported by a fine-grained oak texture.
