LE VIEUX DONJON Rouge, Chateauneuf-du-Pape
2021 is a fine, pointed vintage after an ensuite of rather warm ones and 2020s inconsistencies. Superb cut of briary tannins to the thrust of salted olive brine, charcuterie and darker plum accents mulled in thyme, lavender and rosemary. For those who mistakenly find the southern Rhône's better wines heady, you are sorely mistaken in this instance. Sure, there is oomph. However, it is the refined structural latticework that maketh the wine. Precise and very fine, with the ferrous grunt of mourvedre weaving its dark arts.

Dusty and spicy, this Rhoney grenache unfolds a deeply floral and meaty bouquet whose intense aromas of blackberries and blueberries overlie nuances of polished leather and cedary oak. ItÕs long and vibrant, with rich flavours of dark plums and small berries underpinned by smooth, fine-grained tannins, building in flavour and texture towards its long and savoury finish.
