About this wine
LANGTONS Confidential MXCVI Riesling 6-pack
Aged to perfection, this Confidential riesling is a remarkable expression of a most noble variety. Crafted with grapes from a famous family vineyard in the Sevenhill sub-region of Clare Valley this is an utterly delicious oddity more akin to a fine off-dry style from the Rheingau than the classic bone-dry styles of the Clare Valley. Impeccable winemaking and vineyard nous deftly combine to deliver aromas of toasted honey, marmalade, hints of citrus and kaffir lime. This superb six-pack will have lovers of aged riesling in raptures.

Fermented in 3000L foudres. Aged for nine years before release. Powerful, it could be said, and ludicrously well priced. A soft, supple and mellifluous wine of honeyed characters, ripe apple, juicy lime, toast and truffle. It's all happening. A high note of amontillado in perfume and palate, too. Lovely. It feels like that big barrel lends some gentle, appreciated oxidative notes that build immense complexity and vitality. It's almost like a stellar matured chardonnay, but for that wonderful streak of briny acidity. A full-flavoured, concentrated and wonderful wine of power and presence. Unique, yet so Clare.

Medium straw-gold hue. A rich and classic aged riesling nose—dried mango, honey and butterscotch notes lift from the glass, drawing you in. A sweeter style, rich mango, toffee and toast notes all meld seamlessly into the long and detailed flow. The key to this wine’s joy though is the fine acid and phenolic grip that is built in, so while the richness and generosity at the core could sit heavily, it tightens and dries beautifully in the distractingly long finish. (14 grams/litre residual sugar).

I have great respect for Mitchell’s history of producing classic, high quality, Clare Valley Riesling. As such, I expected this wine to be sound, balanced, and overall very good. Instead, it absolutely floored me. From the moment this vibrant, glowing yellow lime green/gold coloured Riesling hits my glass, I’m captivated. And it only gets better from there. A shot of energetic aromatics permeates the senses – buttered toast, honey, lime, jasmine, preserved lemon, and the faintest hint of kerosene in perfect check. There’s a nutty nuance, too, adding further savoury appeal. The palate holds the same punch, with a good lick of residual sugar bringing glow, breadth, and voluptuous texture before a bright acid backbone slices through it all keeping tautness and verve. A mature Riesling of vibrancy, concentration, texture, and complexity. Outrageous value at $50!
