About this wine
McHenry Hohnen Hazel Vineyard Chardonnay, Margaret River
One of McHenry Hohnen’s three family estate vineyards, Hazel’s is located approximately 10 km inland from the Indian Ocean, near Witchcliffe in the south of the Margaret River region. A northerly aspect, plenty of sunshine, and a soil of granite and ironstone gravel, produces a fruit-forward chardonnay known for its drive and persistence. The biodynamically grown Gingin clone chardonnay is hand-picked, whole-bunch pressed and fermented in French oak barriques (30% new). To retain, or to balance, natural acidity, vintages may undergo no, or partial, malolactic fermentation.

McHenry Hohnen's trio of single-vineyard chardonnays are made identically, so the result is a reflection of site for each, yet Hazel’s Vineyard also reveals more of the winemaking inputs in its youth. Great wine though. Yellow stone fruit, grapefruit and pith plus a range of spices. The flavours build across the generous palate filled out by creamy, nutty lees and some chicken stock flavours, which are lees derived. Yup, moreish and savoury.

Enticing aromas of grapefruit pith, melon skin, struck match, nougat, grilled nuts and white flowers. Really smart. Textured, layered, mouth-filling and long. Flavours are in the citrus and just-ripe stone fruit zone, along with a lick of nutty, complexing oak and punchy, mineral acidity. A tightly coiled wine that has plenty to offer now and will age very nicely.

An exceptional nose, subdued, classy and confident. Nougatine, cantaloupe and jasmine notes, with a hint of cedar, reverberate across a mid-weighted palate with a juicy acid spine and strident length, taut and indelibly creamy all at once. Loam and gravel marks this single vineyard expression. A joy to drink. Drink or hold. From biodynamically grown grapes.
