OAKRIDGE ESTATE 864 Funder & Diamond Vineyard Drive Block Chardonnay, Yarra Valley 2021 Bottle
About this wine
The 864 Chardonnay entered the Langton’s Classification in the Seventh Edition in 2018.
‘an enduring Yarra Valley classic’
- James Halliday
The pristine, expressive and genre-leading Oakridge 864 Chardonnay profoundly reflects the power of the Yarra Valley landscape and empathy of spirit. Low-cropping vineyards, hand picking, whole bunch pressing, oxidative handling, natural yeasts, high solids, warm ferments and maturation in oak puncheons result in a wine of superb white peach and flinty aromatics, fine, chalky yet supple textures, and a precise line of purity.

Philip Rich
From the Funder and Diamond vineyard, planted in Wandin East with the P58 clone in 1990. Hand picked and whole-bunch pressed to French puncheons (20% new) for fermentation and 10 months' maturation before another six months in tank. A bright, pale green gold. Another truly great, albeit restrained release, with piercing aromas of white nectarines, nashi, pink grapefruit, white flowers and crushed stone. Simultaneously concentrated and elegant, the pure, mineral-inflected and chalky palate is painfully long. Still just a baby, this might just be the best and possibly the most long-lived Oakridge 864 Chardonnay yet. Another feather in the cap for David Bicknell, the Australian chardonnay maestro.

Fresh, bright and lively in the glass; a youthful wine. Really complex and evocative aromas of grapefruit pith, struck match, melon skin, just-ripe white peach, briar and wet stone. The palate is fine, focused and has a fabulous spine of acidity. The flavours are in the stone fruit and citrus realms and there's a savoury, mealy, nuttiness adding complexity. Textured, layered, mouth-filling and long: a very complete chardonnay.

Oakridge Estate, founded in 1978, has had a longstanding reputation for quality. It has been blessed with a succession of talented winemakers. The winery, located at 864 Maroondah Highway at Coldstream in the Yarra Valley, is led by esteemed veteran winemaker Dave Bicknell. It is under his watch that Oakridge has blossomed and excelled. The fruit is sourced from both owned and independent grower vineyards. David and his team are renowned for producing exceptional single vineyard wines made with minimal intervention, and in using innovative and sustainable practices in winemaking and viticulture. The wines are beautifully made and illustrate the idea that winemaker’s intuition and skill are completely intertwined with the idea of distinguished vineyard site. The Reserve style wines, labelled 864 and released in top vintages, are outstanding and comprise a Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.
