About this wine
Oakridge Wines Vineyard Series Willowlake Chardonnay, Yarra Valley
The wines from the Willowlake Vineyard provide a fascinating contrast to those from the Henk Vineyard. First planted in 1992, the vineyard is located near Gladysdale and boasts red volcanic soils and an elevation of 170 metres. Like every wine in the Vineyard Series, minimal intervention in the winery is the name of the game. After hand harvesting, whole bunches are included in the fermentation which takes place in 500 litre French oak puncheons. After nine months maturation on yeast lees, the resulting wine serves up complex characters of citrus, nectarine, fresh dough and gun flint. In a word, it’s sublime.

Philip Rich
From the 1979 plantings of P58 chardonnay from the Willowlake vineyard in Gladysdale. Like all the Oakridge 2020s, this was hand picked and whole-bunch pressed to French oak puncheons for fermentation and maturation. A very bright green gold. Excites from the first, with its aromas of white cut pears, stone fruits and an intriguing, perfectly handled flinty, freshly torched brûlée-top reduction. This has terrific drive and persistence on the palate, and the textured and layered mouth feel is balanced by the wine's perfectly integrated acidity.

Willowlake was planted in 1978, impressive in both Yarra Valley and chardonnay terms.
This is a treat. Flavour, punch and length. Flavours of grapefruit, white peach and cedarwood sing melodically through the palate, flint and chalk notes appearing with air. There’s some green pineapple-like flavour here too, as a genuine positive. From the first sip to the last, I was in thrall.

Oakridge Estate, founded in 1978, has had a longstanding reputation for quality. It has been blessed with a succession of talented winemakers. The winery, located at 864 Maroondah Highway at Coldstream in the Yarra Valley, is led by esteemed veteran winemaker Dave Bicknell. It is under his watch that Oakridge has blossomed and excelled. The fruit is sourced from both owned and independent grower vineyards. David and his team are renowned for producing exceptional single vineyard wines made with minimal intervention, and in using innovative and sustainable practices in winemaking and viticulture. The wines are beautifully made and illustrate the idea that winemaker’s intuition and skill are completely intertwined with the idea of distinguished vineyard site. The Reserve style wines, labelled 864 and released in top vintages, are outstanding and comprise a Chardonnay, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.
