About this wine
Passopisciaro Passorosso Nerello Mascalese, Sicily
Passopisciaro Passorosso is crafted from Nerello Mascalese grown on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna, one of the most dynamic wine regions in Sicily. The high-altitude vineyards, ranging from 500 to 1,000 metres, are rooted in mineral-rich lava soils, which shape the wine’s distinctive character. Winemaker Andrea Franchetti, a pioneer of Etna’s modern renaissance, is dedicated to showcasing the unique expression of this ancient varietal.
Passorosso is fermented in stainless steel to retain purity of fruit, followed by ageing in large neutral oak barrels, allowing the wine to develop complexity without excessive oak influence. The result is a balanced and elegant wine that reflects its volcanic terroir.
Expect aromas of red berries, wild herbs, and a touch of earthiness. On the palate, vibrant acidity is balanced by fine tannins and flavours of cherry, cranberry, and a mineral edge that speaks to its volcanic origins.

I don’t usually get to taste the Passorosso (this wine) alongside all the single contrada wines, so that’s interesting. Well, at least for me. This wine is not as engaging as the cru wines, though it does present a good account of the character of the vintage. Importer: Mondo
Poached strawberry, honey, dried herbs and fresh mint. It’s medium-bodied, stony and fleshy, ripe red berries with a little spice, fine talc-like tannin grip, savoury too, with dusty tannin and a dash of aniseed on a subtly perfumed finish of good length. Not especially concentrated, but a lovely example of Etna rosso here.
93+ points, Gary Walsh
