Always a favourite and what is especially exciting is that, for me, this is the finest 138 yet made. Grenache (50%), Shiraz (44%) and Mataro (6%), it is entirely sourced from the Barossa Valley. A year maturing in a mix of French (10% new) and American (2% new) oak. The colour is a vibrant deep purple and there is an utterly gorgeous nose with depth and early complexity. Blackcurrants, black cherries, warm earth, mocha, new leather, violets and spices, this is taut, balanced, seamless and seductive. Arabica coffee bean notes emerge on the palate, along with a hint of a bitter almond character on the finish. Exemplary structure, very fine tannins and great length, this is a brilliant wine with fifteen to twenty years ahead. It may go even higher. A great 138.

The cool 2021 season has set off Barossa grenache with delightful fragrance and exciting, vibrant acid drive, wonderfully enlarged with the depth, structure and black fruit presence of shiraz and mataro. Dark chocolate oak provides well-executed support, setting off a frame of firm, fine-grained tannins for the long-haul. One of the greatest Bin 138s yet.

Medium crimson. Fragrant musky plum, blackberry, chinotto, cola aromas. Inky textured and smooth with lovely musky plum, blackberry pastille fruits, some cola notes, fine lacy textures and attractive mid palate viscosity. Finishes silky and long with a fine lacy plume. A lovely fruit driven early drinking style. 50% Grenache, 44% Shiraz, 6% Mataro, 12 months maturation in 88% seasoned, 10% new French and 2% new American oak hogsheads. Drink now – Keep for a while 14.5% alc

A Barossa Valley blend of 50/44/6% grenache/shiraz/mataro aged in French (10% new) and American (2% new) oak for 12 months. Purple splashed crimson in the glass and quite perfumed on the nose with notes of dark plum and berry fruits, pressed flowers, cola, souk-like spice, black tea and earth. It sports a savoury palate shape with characteristically plush fruit depth, tight, compact tannins and a medium-length finish packed with ripe plums and spices.

A more compact and taut GSM than I recall in past years. Mid-weighted of feel despite the extract and alcohol, righteous for the blend at hand Christmas cake spice, damson and picked cherry. A slither of spicy freshness doused in clove, Asian five-spice, cardamon and white pepper, with a medicinal lilt of Chinotto rounding out the easy going finish. This is really rather delicious. Drink or hold.

The 2021 Bin 138 is this year led by Grenache (50%), Shiraz (44%) and Mataro (6%) and is creamy and full on the nose, with roast lamb, raspberry, pink peppercorn, chewing tobacco and black tea. In the mouth, the wine is plump and chewy and loaded with flavor. It's an exciting wine to drink! Pleasure. First vintage 1992. 14.5% alcohol, sealed under natural cork.

Penfolds
Penfolds is one of the world’s most celebrated winemakers with an enviable reputation for quality at every price level. Christopher Rawson Penfold began it all in 1844. A doctor, with an eye for medicinal winemaking, he and his wife, Mary sought a new life in Australia with a vine cutting and a bold vision. The family purchased Magill, now a suburb of Adelaide, and set about inventing tonics, brandies, and fortified wines made from grapes and Australian sunshine. The Penfolds House Style emerged from this craft of fortified wine production and blending.
The success of Penfolds has been driven by a lineage of visionary winemakers who pushed innovation to bold new heights. Max Schubert, the creator of Penfolds Grange, Dr Ray Beckwith and their team pioneered: major advances in yeast technology and paper chromatography; the understanding and use of pH in controlling bacterial spoilage; the use of headed down/submerged cap fermentation and the technique of rack and return; cold fermentation practices; the use of American oak as a maturation vessel and perhaps most critically, partial barrel fermentation. The use of American oak and barrel fermentation is considered traditional Barossa winemaking practice, in large part due to the work of Penfolds.
Today, the art of blending remains integral to the Penfolds House Style - a unique combination of highly defined fruit aromas, ripe tannins, richness, power and concentration. The most powerful expression of this is the flagship, Grange, now recognised as one of the most consistent of the world’s great wines. Similarly, Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz, first released in 1960, is now considered the quintessential Australian wine blend. Improved vineyard management, site selection and winemaking brought about the subsequent releases of Penfolds wines such as Bin 707 and Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon – both highly acclaimed and collected wines to this day.
The Penfolds Philosophy is the accumulation of nearly 180 years of shared knowledge and continual refinement. This began with Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold, continued with Max Schubert, Ray Beckwith and generations of Penfolds winemakers leading to the current winemaking team, led by Peter Gago. Their commitment to constantly improving their work, whilst honouring the winemaking techniques of their predecessors, contributes to the consistency of style and quality that Penfolds is known for around the world.
