Tyson Stelzer
Juicy, fruity and friendly, this is a Bin 23 that revels in layers of fresh strawberries and raspberries, beautifully enlivened with the bright acidity of 2022 and set to an impeccable mesh of super-fine tannins. This is a label that is increasingly distancing itself from the Penfolds red winemaking stereotype as it more articulately captures the compelling voice of Tasmanian pinot. A noble evolution indeed!

Tasmania replaced the Adelaide Hills as the source region for this cuvée last year, and while that 2021 vintage was undeniably pretty it lacked definition. Boding well for the future, this release has welcome structure from fine tannins and phenolic grip, plus bracing acidity to cut through more concentrated fruit. Aromas of rosehip, red cherry and hibiscus continue on the vibrant, light-bodied palate whose easy cherryade juiciness is complemented by hints of cola, orange peel and a slatey tang. Deliciously moreish but will develop over mid-term ageing.

First released as an Adelaide Hills pinot noir in 1997, today the fruit source for Bin 23 has shifted to the isle of Tasmania. This wine from the low-yielding 2022 vintage was matured in French oak barriques (35% new). Bright red in the glass with a lively aromatic profile showing characters of red cherry, cranberry and wild strawberry along with hints of sous bois, white truffle, mushroom broth, forest floor, exotic spice and game meats. Medium bodied and fine of frame on the palate showing some nice gamey nuance and a sense of space and clarity. Minerally acidity provides the pulse and the finish fans out with spiced cherry, Peking duck and light amaro tones.

Bin 23 is now firmly inducted into the annual Penfolds Collection release. It would seem that changing sourcing from the Adelaide Hills to Tasmania has sealed the deal. The 2022 is on the lighter, brighter fruit side with red fruits aplenty to start, in aromas of black cherry, morello cherry, strawberry and spice. Delicate and restrained, it brings Tasmanian fine-edged tannins to the fore in league with red berries, amaro bitters, cranberry and pomegranate. Overall, a refined and restrained style with some exotic notes and good detail. That dry amaro bitters finish adds a delightful savoury touch. Drink: 2023-2030

Not certain that Penfolds have decided on just what style this wine will eventually follow. Never less than enjoyable, it does seem a wine which plays a little fast and loose with style. This year, the fruit is from Tasmania. Maturation was in French oak barriques (35% of which were new). The 2022 vintage here was one of lower yields but exceptional quality. Pale crimson hue, the aromatics weave through florals, spices, a hint of an undergrowth character and brambles with strawberries to the fore. A supple and silky texture with impressive balance and still very young. Satiny tannins, a fine line of acidity and suggestions that some whole berries are involved. Fresh and delicious, with the potential to step up even further. Enjoy over the next six to eight years.

Penfolds
Penfolds is one of the world’s most celebrated winemakers with an enviable reputation for quality at every price level. Christopher Rawson Penfold began it all in 1844. A doctor, with an eye for medicinal winemaking, he and his wife, Mary sought a new life in Australia with a vine cutting and a bold vision. The family purchased Magill, now a suburb of Adelaide, and set about inventing tonics, brandies, and fortified wines made from grapes and Australian sunshine. The Penfolds House Style emerged from this craft of fortified wine production and blending.
The success of Penfolds has been driven by a lineage of visionary winemakers who pushed innovation to bold new heights. Max Schubert, the creator of Penfolds Grange, Dr Ray Beckwith and their team pioneered: major advances in yeast technology and paper chromatography; the understanding and use of pH in controlling bacterial spoilage; the use of headed down/submerged cap fermentation and the technique of rack and return; cold fermentation practices; the use of American oak as a maturation vessel and perhaps most critically, partial barrel fermentation. The use of American oak and barrel fermentation is considered traditional Barossa winemaking practice, in large part due to the work of Penfolds.
Today, the art of blending remains integral to the Penfolds House Style - a unique combination of highly defined fruit aromas, ripe tannins, richness, power and concentration. The most powerful expression of this is the flagship, Grange, now recognised as one of the most consistent of the world’s great wines. Similarly, Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz, first released in 1960, is now considered the quintessential Australian wine blend. Improved vineyard management, site selection and winemaking brought about the subsequent releases of Penfolds wines such as Bin 707 and Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon – both highly acclaimed and collected wines to this day.
The Penfolds Philosophy is the accumulation of nearly 180 years of shared knowledge and continual refinement. This began with Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold, continued with Max Schubert, Ray Beckwith and generations of Penfolds winemakers leading to the current winemaking team, led by Peter Gago. Their commitment to constantly improving their work, whilst honouring the winemaking techniques of their predecessors, contributes to the consistency of style and quality that Penfolds is known for around the world.
