About this wine
PENFOLDS Bin 51 Riesling, Eden Valley
Introduced in 1999 (originally as Eden Valley Reserve Bin Riesling), Bin 51 (from 2006) captures the attributes of the Eden Valley, adjacent to the Barossa Valley. The region’s altitude and cool climate consistently produces Riesling of great finesse and elegance with a capacity for long term cellaring.
"Power, delicacy and longevity"
- Huon Hooke at the Bin 51
tasting held for The Rewards of Patience #7 (2013)
Bin 51 is typically fragrant with intense lime and rose petal aromas and fine, cutting acidity. It develops complexity and richness with age without losing clarity, freshness or linear acid structure. Grape parcels are batch-vinified in steel tanks and bottled early under screw-caps to preserve pristine fruit characters, freshness and natural mineral quality.

This scintillating 2023 Riesling Bin 51 illustrates the magic to be found in the Eden Valley from this vintage. It offers up a freight train of vibrant, precise aromas as it bursts with lime juice and pith with an exotic floral lift, plus a touch of sulphur from recent bottling, which will fade quickly. There's a beautiful compact shape, too, all tight, focused and pristine. There is fantastic power and volume of fruit to follow, with al-dente acidity providing the perfect backbone as its powers through to a long, sustained, vibrant finish. Brilliant stuff from a great year.

Pale colour. Lime, grapefruit, camomile aromas with flinty, hint talc notes. Pure fruited wine with lemon, grapefruit camomile, tonic water flavours, fine al dente textures and fresh long mineral acidity. Lovely mouthwatering finish. A high quality Eden Valley Riesling with lovely fragrance, volume, moderately low alcohol and torque. Should develop very well. Drink now – 2030 11% alc

Ensuring that Chardonnay is not the only white variety in the Penfolds portfolio that warrants attention, this is a class act in what was a long, cool and wet growing season with lots of disease pressure. Pure, zippy and direct are the key descriptors here, the aromas like a laser beam of lemon: zest, juice, flesh and blossom. On the palate, racy acidity cuts a clean citrus seam through lime leaf, wet stones and tangy yuzu pannacotta. Great intensity and focus and, while tasty now, careful cellaring will pay dividends.

The 2023 Bin 51 Riesling leads with an austere, searing nose of grilled lime, bath salts, lemon zest, crushed quartz, preserved citrus and pear skin. In the mouth, the wine is fleshy in its way and light on its feet. It's a beautiful wine, poised without being heavy or concentrated, and there's a cleansing finish that has a rounded feel to it. It doesn't unfurl like the 2022 did, but it is so pretty regardless. Flowers. 11% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

2023 makes a grand statement for Bin 51, a season that captures the full depth of intensity and the grand expanse of exoticism of riesling, all the while delivering accentuated floral lift and a shard of pure freshness that proclaim a cool season. A core of lemon and lime is generously embellished with star fruit, golden kiwi, persimmon and fig. It closes out with both succulent body and taut acid line, projecting outstanding line and length in the presence of impressive concentration.

Penfolds
Penfolds is one of the world’s most celebrated winemakers with an enviable reputation for quality at every price level. Christopher Rawson Penfold began it all in 1844. A doctor, with an eye for medicinal winemaking, he and his wife, Mary sought a new life in Australia with a vine cutting and a bold vision. The family purchased Magill, now a suburb of Adelaide, and set about inventing tonics, brandies, and fortified wines made from grapes and Australian sunshine. The Penfolds House Style emerged from this craft of fortified wine production and blending.
The success of Penfolds has been driven by a lineage of visionary winemakers who pushed innovation to bold new heights. Max Schubert, the creator of Penfolds Grange, Dr Ray Beckwith and their team pioneered: major advances in yeast technology and paper chromatography; the understanding and use of pH in controlling bacterial spoilage; the use of headed down/submerged cap fermentation and the technique of rack and return; cold fermentation practices; the use of American oak as a maturation vessel and perhaps most critically, partial barrel fermentation. The use of American oak and barrel fermentation is considered traditional Barossa winemaking practice, in large part due to the work of Penfolds.
Today, the art of blending remains integral to the Penfolds House Style - a unique combination of highly defined fruit aromas, ripe tannins, richness, power and concentration. The most powerful expression of this is the flagship, Grange, now recognised as one of the most consistent of the world’s great wines. Similarly, Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz, first released in 1960, is now considered the quintessential Australian wine blend. Improved vineyard management, site selection and winemaking brought about the subsequent releases of Penfolds wines such as Bin 707 and Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon – both highly acclaimed and collected wines to this day.
The Penfolds Philosophy is the accumulation of nearly 180 years of shared knowledge and continual refinement. This began with Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold, continued with Max Schubert, Ray Beckwith and generations of Penfolds winemakers leading to the current winemaking team, led by Peter Gago. Their commitment to constantly improving their work, whilst honouring the winemaking techniques of their predecessors, contributes to the consistency of style and quality that Penfolds is known for around the world.
