The purity, precision and confidence of Bin A are on pinpoint form in the great 2022 season, set to a tune of exacting white peach, grapefruit and fig. Toasty, biscuity French oak rises to the occasion, falling in neatly behind the fruit, entangling seamlessly on a finish of outstanding line and length, impeccably framed in vibrant lemon juice acidity that promises great things in the cellar.

Light yellow colour; bright lemon rind, beeswax aromas of refined, restrained complexity, oak invisible. Nougat, gently toasted hazelnuts and honey also. Brilliant refinement and intensity, crisp and delicate, marvellous harmony of components. Long persistence allied with low-alcohol delicacy. A wine of real finesse.

Sourced from the Adelaide Hills, whole bunched pressed, the juice sees a mix of wild fermentation and inoculation in both new and seasoned French oak barriques. 100% malo and maturation for 8 months in French oak barriques, 75% new. Pale straw hue, a real step up in complexity and intensity. Oak is evident at this early stage, but integration is underway. Lemon/lime notes, minerals, florals, a walnut character, the texture is seamless, reminiscent of crème brulee. There is really impressive length and an intensity which never waivers. A Chardonnay with punch. Love it – drink now for a decade.

Nougat and curd, with some cinnamon spice from the oak. Tangerine, pistachio, granny smith apple and kumquat, segue to glazed quince. Tighter than the 311 with less stone fruit allusions, but not necessarily a better wine. It will impress the acid hounds and critical cavalry given the rapier-like intensity. Some oatmeal to bread crumb leesiness, offering subtle mid-palate generosity. Long and steely. Drinkable now, but best from 2025. Screw cap.

The Reserve Bin Chardonnay is sourced exclusively from the Adelaide Hills, and the 2022 Reserve Bin A Chardonnay was again (as in 2021) the beneficiary of an excellent season. Matured for eight months in French oak (75% new), the wine here is creamy and saturated (drenched) in salted stone fruit flavor. This is another superstar release for this cuvée, and it illustrates the capacity for greatness in the Penfolds whites. The Chardonnays go through 100% malolactic fermentation and are inoculated with the Penfolds yeast isolate, and it is notoriously integrated, even at this early stage. It may seem an odd thing to note here, but I am struck by it every year. Powerhouse. Awesome. It ages prodigiously, stands up beautifully in masked lineups and paints a magnificent picture of the Adelaide Hills. It's salty and palate-staining and has curry leaf, brine, green olive, yellow-fleshed peach (al denté), white flowers, green apple, wet concrete and pine trees after rain. Excellent. Highly recommended. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Penfolds' single-region Adelaide Hills chardonnay has, over the years, become a favourite of mine for its steely driveline and length of flavour. The 2022 continues in the same vein with pure crunchy green apple, nectarine and nashi pear notes cut with hints of fine spice, almond paste, white flowers, grilled cashews, nougat and clotted cream. Tightly coiled and bristling with minerally energy, it shows great velocity over the palate and wonderfully pure fruit, travelling long and true with impressive clarity and detail. Another great Hills release.

Penfolds
Penfolds is one of the world’s most celebrated winemakers with an enviable reputation for quality at every price level. Christopher Rawson Penfold began it all in 1844. A doctor, with an eye for medicinal winemaking, he and his wife, Mary sought a new life in Australia with a vine cutting and a bold vision. The family purchased Magill, now a suburb of Adelaide, and set about inventing tonics, brandies, and fortified wines made from grapes and Australian sunshine. The Penfolds House Style emerged from this craft of fortified wine production and blending.
The success of Penfolds has been driven by a lineage of visionary winemakers who pushed innovation to bold new heights. Max Schubert, the creator of Penfolds Grange, Dr Ray Beckwith and their team pioneered: major advances in yeast technology and paper chromatography; the understanding and use of pH in controlling bacterial spoilage; the use of headed down/submerged cap fermentation and the technique of rack and return; cold fermentation practices; the use of American oak as a maturation vessel and perhaps most critically, partial barrel fermentation. The use of American oak and barrel fermentation is considered traditional Barossa winemaking practice, in large part due to the work of Penfolds.
Today, the art of blending remains integral to the Penfolds House Style - a unique combination of highly defined fruit aromas, ripe tannins, richness, power and concentration. The most powerful expression of this is the flagship, Grange, now recognised as one of the most consistent of the world’s great wines. Similarly, Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz, first released in 1960, is now considered the quintessential Australian wine blend. Improved vineyard management, site selection and winemaking brought about the subsequent releases of Penfolds wines such as Bin 707 and Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon – both highly acclaimed and collected wines to this day.
The Penfolds Philosophy is the accumulation of nearly 180 years of shared knowledge and continual refinement. This began with Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold, continued with Max Schubert, Ray Beckwith and generations of Penfolds winemakers leading to the current winemaking team, led by Peter Gago. Their commitment to constantly improving their work, whilst honouring the winemaking techniques of their predecessors, contributes to the consistency of style and quality that Penfolds is known for around the world.
