PEWSEY VALE 1961 Block Riesling, Eden Valley 2017 Bottle
About this wine
Langton’s is proud to be first to market with the inaugural vintage of this Riesling, a selection from a very special part of the famous Contours vineyard.
When it comes to Eden Valley Riesling, no name is greater than the Langton’s Classified Contours Riesling from Pewsey Vale.
The Contours vineyard was first planted in 1841, but the distinctive site we know today -- with vines planted along the contours of an Eden Valley hillside rather than in straight rows -- dates from the 1960s.
From 1961 in fact, and this new wine comes from a single block of the oldest vines, planted in that year on a north-facing slope.
The Contours Riesling is released with five years of bottle age. This new wine -- although almost equally ageworthy -- is a more approachable style and therefore suitable for release (like most other Rieslings) in the year following vintage.
For many (or most) the 1961 Block Riesling will be indistinguishable from The Contours. The value here is obvious.

James Halliday
The first release from the 56yo vines. It has the precision, length and balance of the best of the Contours; crispy acidity lifts the finish and aftertaste. The drink to date 20 years hence is not fanciful. Drink by 2037.

A new bottling of the oldest and best parcel on the vineyard. This has a greater sense of depth and fleshy concentration. Steely and stony notes with pure lemon citrus. The palate has excellent texture and pithy concentration.

This wine looked stellar on first try, but watch it soar on day two – a portent for the future.
Pretty perfume of frangipani and green leaves, fragrant ginger and lemongrass, citrus, pith and juice, grapefruit sorbet. Such a lovely start. Beautiful texture and softeness of mineral-draped acidity. Slate, wet pebble, then the tang of citrus, touch of tonic water, pop of green herbs, maybe even eucalyptus in there. Character filled, softness and mineral charm in spades. Superb.
95+ points, Mike Bennie (February 2018)

Huon Hooke
From a block of vines planted in 1961. A dry style like the regular Pewsey (both are normally below 2 grams/litre), and this seems a shade fuller than the standard wine, with a more textured palate. There's the merest suggestion of tannin adding structure, and it could be served with heartier foods. (Louisa Rose thinks this is more stony, lemon-myrtle and ti-tree as opposed to the finger-lime of the regular Pewsey. It's a warmer, north-facing block of vines.)

A stunning wine with incredible line and intensity. The citrus focused palate is sophisticated and poised; a delicious mix of lemon and lime flavours defined by a solid core of acidity. The wine is pure and focused with subtle juiciness. Buy some to drink now, and some to lay down for the future.

Joe Czerwinski
A selection of the oldest vines on the property, the 2017 1961 Block Riesling is tighter and zestier than the regular bottling, yet it also shows a hint of peach to go along with green apple and lime. Light to medium-bodied, it closes with notes of citrus pith and wet stones. Drink it now or in 10-plus years.
