PEWSEY VALE 1961 Block Riesling, Eden Valley 2018 Bottle
About this wine
Pewsey Vale 1961 Block Riesling, Eden Valley
Pewsey Vale Vineyard is a pioneer of high-altitude viticulture in South Australia. The 1961 Block refers to the specific contour plantings established during the estate's restoration in the early 1960s. These vines grow in grey sandy loam over yellow clay at 485 metres above sea level. This elevation ensures a cool ripening period, preserving the natural acidity and aromatic profile of the Riesling grape.
The winemaking follows a minimalist approach to highlight the site. Fruit is harvested in the cool of the night to prevent oxidation. Only free-run juice is used, followed by cold fermentation in stainless-steel tanks. This process avoids skin contact and oak influence, ensuring the wine remains a pure expression of its granitic soil.
The nose is defined by lime zest, white flowers, and crushed stone. On the palate, the wine is bone-dry and linear. It delivers flavours of green apple and lemon, supported by a distinct mineral tension. This Riesling is noted for its ability to age for decades, developing honeyed characters while maintaining its structural integrity.
