Pierre-Jean Villa has built a reputation for precision since establishing his domaine in 2009. While his top-tier Côte-Rôtie and Saint-Joseph bottlings command high prices, the Esprit d’Antan offers a gateway to his meticulous style. This Syrah is sourced from vines planted on the steep, granitic slopes of the Collines Rhodaniennes, just outside the formal appellation boundaries. It represents Villa’s desire to produce a wine that prioritises freshness and immediate drinkability without sacrificing the character of the Northern Rhône.

The winemaking remains traditional yet disciplined. Villa employs partial whole-cluster fermentation to enhance structural grip and aromatic lift. The wine spends 12 months maturing in seasoned French oak barrels, a choice that allows the fruit to take centre stage rather than the wood's tannins. This approach results in a clean expression of the grape, reflecting the region's cool climate and rocky soils.

Expect a profile defined by cracked black pepper, violets and smoked meat. The palate delivers tart blackberry and olive tapenade underpinned by firm acidity.
