About this wine

The Primo Estate Joseph Moda Cabernet Sauvignon, first produced in 1987, was inspired by the Amarone wines of Valpolicella in Northern Italy. The wine is made from partially dried fruit, left out in the shade for two weeks, post-harvest. Typically the sugar levels rise from around 13 to 15 Baume. Moda is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot from two vineyards in McLaren Vale and Clarendon. The wine is fermented in traditional open fermenters and then aged in 50% new French and American barriques for 20 months before bottling. This is a voluptuous “Iron fist in a velvet glove” style, but after several years it reveals “a natural Australian richness, cigar-box characters and earthy antique shop complexity.”

ABOUT THE WINERY
Primo Estate
Located in McLaren Vale, Primo Estate’s wines are a true reflection of Australian practicality and Italian heritage. The original vineyards located in the Adelaide Plains were planted by Primo Grilli, an immigrant Italian and market gardener with a remarkable dream to make wine. After 20 years building up a modest market garden, he hocked everything to build a winery for his sons Peter and Joe, each barely into trousers. Joe Grilli duly went off to nearby Roseworthy Agricultural College to study winemaking, spending his spare time in the winery mucking around with radical new ideas and making a stock in trade fruity Colombard and other simple, easy drinking wines. Over the years under Joe’s leadership, the estate has grown and now produces two different ranges of wines including the mid-tier Primo Estate and top-tier Joseph range.
