QUINTARELLI Alzero, Veneto IGT 2016 Bottle
About this wine
Quintarelli Alzero Veneto IGT
The Alzero is the Quintarelli response to the Super Tuscan of the region’s ancient rivals to the south in Tuscany. The blend is vintage dependent but somewhere around 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot that Ned Goodwin MW described as a ‘unicorn cuvée.’ What makes this wine so special is that the fruit is given the appassimento treatment—this involves drying the fruit prior to making the wine thus adding depth, richness and concentration. So it’s a Amorone style Bordeaux blend from the Veneto.
The Alzero is an imposing wine, an edifice constructed of succulent berries and rich orchard fruits that wash over a cast of savoury characters; dried, wild herbs, freshly turned earth, cut cigar and old knotted bramble. The coiled acidity fires, fléchette-like, through an intense palate that is framed in architectural, chewy tannins. There are no contextless notes to be made such is the degree of integration owing to 60 to 100 days of appassimento drying on straw mats. This is followed by two or three years in French oak barriques prior to an additional four years in Slavonian oak. More time in the cellar is advised to present this wine when truly ready.

Located in the heart of the Valpolicella district of Veneto, Quintarelli is a renowned family wine estate with a near cult-like status. Founder and patriarch the late Giuseppe Quintarelli was known as the ‘Master of the Veneto’. He built his reputation by crafting small quantities of top quality wine made to the highest standards of perfection and released only when ready to drink. Since his death in 2012, the family continue to carry on his remarkable legacy. The grapes are meticulously selected in the vineyards often requiring many passes to obtain only the best, perfectly ripened fruit. Quintarelli wines are always small in allocation, high in demand, expensive but always an exceptional experience. The estate produces an array of top-tier wines including the Bianco Secco IGT, Primofiore IGT, Valpolicella Superiore, Rosso Ca del Merlo, Recioto della Valpolicella, and an Amarone della Valpolicella widely considered to be the very best in the region.
