About this wine
René Rostaing Cote Blonde, Côte-Rôtie
René Rostaing's Côte Blonde is drawn from some of the most prized parcels in Côte-Rôtie, where schist and gneiss soils lend structure and finesse. This wine brings together fruit from La Garde and La Landonne, inherited from his father-in-law, Albert Dervieux. Rostaing is known for carefully balancing tradition and precision—fermenting with partial whole bunches and ageing the wine in mostly used oak barrels to preserve the site's character and season. Côte Blonde is produced only in select vintages, offering a layered, age-worthy expression of Syrah with a small addition of Viognier. Each release shows a clear thread: violets, dark berry fruit, and olive tapenade on the nose, followed by a palate that moves through savoury depth, mineral drive, and fine tannin. It's a wine that rewards cellaring and sits confidently alongside the region's most sought-after names. Quantities are extremely limited each year.Wine Details

Deep, glistening ruby. Intensely perfumed, sharply delineated red and blue fruits, incense, candied violet and Moroccan spices on the seductively perfumed nose. Stains the palate with juicy, mineral-driven cherry, black raspberry and blueberry flavors, which are complemented by suggestions of olive paste, candied flowers and allspice. Shows superb focus and energy on the strikingly long finish, which features harmonious tannins and reverberating floral and mineral notes. All whole clusters.

Decanter
This is full-bodied, ripe and round, but also open, beautifully fragrant, elegant and expressive, displaying potpourri, lily, rose, raspberry and blackberry fruit. There's a solid tannic base, almost too tannic at this stage, but they are fine-grained and largely fruit-derived, just slightly dry. Rich in alcohol, but you don't really feel it, more the opulence and richness. Arguably not the finest or most elegant vintage, but nonetheless a wine full of pleasure.

I tasted this relatively quickly as part of a larger, blind tasting.
Mint, spearmint and lavender. Not a lot of aroma but what’s there is fresh and cooling. Orange oil and meat as well. Palate is an exercise in prettiness, power and presence. Lots of florals, lots of blue/berried fruit, inputs from red and black cherry. It has both succulence and brood; it has fine, firm structure and while the length isn’t quite there for now, it’s coiled. The length will come. Super.
