About this wine
The wines under De Bortoli’s Riorret label (it’s the word ‘terroir’ spelled backwards) are single-vineyard expressions of ‘Melbourne Dress Circle’ Pinot Noir and Chardonnay made only in the best seasons and even then only when the wine speaks of the place that the grapes used to make it were grown.

Here’s a dark, brooding Pinot Noir of extract and dark cherry and chocolate flavour. It’s tannic and full of sweet orange acidity, even blackcurrant, boot leather and earth, and a tangy finish of excellent length. I like it, but it’s its own beast.

Deep, youthful red/purple colour, very good depth and hue for its age, while the bouquet is of brooding dark cherry to black plum, ripe and rich, with a subtle herb overlay, the palate full-bodied and solidly built with a generous helping of firm tannins and a long, structured finish that includes enough tannin to enable it to partner hearty foods. This is at the big end of Aussie pinot noir. Long, long follow-through. An impressive pinot, which appears to be ageing slowly and have a big future.

Blocks B, E & F. There's a decadence about this wine. It's rich and ripe – not too much, as it has a coolness of its Upper Yarra site – but more in the depth and how it feels. All the usual and pleasing flavours are pressed together, then expand across the fuller-bodied palate. Lovely smooth tannins and the finish lingers long.
