About this wine

SAILOR SEEKS HORSE Dijon Clone Pinot Noir, Huon Valley

Paul and Gilli Lipscombe established Sailor Seeks Horse after rehabilitating a derelict vineyard in the Huon Valley, one of Australia’s most southerly and coolest viticultural regions. The 2024 season was defined by exceptionally dry and warm conditions, which reduced yields to a mere 1.7 tonnes per hectare. This concentration is balanced by the specific site selection, a north-east facing slope of sandstone and siltstone—which maintains the wine's characteristic tension.

The Dijon Clone release is a blend of 114, 115, 777, and Abel clones. Unlike the estate bottling, this fruit is entirely destemmed to focus on fruit clarity and sleek texture. The winemaking involves wild yeast fermentation and an extended post-ferment maceration before the wine is pressed to barrel for 12 months. With 42% new oak and bottled unfined, the wood provides a framework for the fruit rather than dominating it.This is a precise, site-driven Pinot Noir from a producer currently at the forefront of Tasmanian winemaking.

ABOUT THE WINERY
Sailor Seeks Horse

Paul (he’s English) and Gilli (she’s from Brisbane) Lipscombe met in England in 2004 before embarking on a wine journey that would take them from the Languedoc in the south of France to Oregon in the US, New Zealand and Margaret River in WA before arriving in Tasmania’s Huon Valley in 2010.  It didn’t take them long to settle down and they soon purchased the dilapidated Huon Valley vineyard which they have slowly transformed into one of Tassie’s shining jewels making a string of pure, finely crafted and highly sought after wines.  Along the way, they have also found the time to make nine vintages of nearby Home Hill’s award-winning wines as well as assisting Jim and Daisy Chatto in the early days of their own exciting project in the Huon Valley!
