Sailor Seeks Horse Pinot Noir, Huon Valley
The Huon Valley, just south of Hobart is one of the hotspots for Pinot Noir in the southern Hemisphere and Paul and Gilli Lipscombe’s small Sailor Seeks Horse project has earned a reputation as one of Tassie’s best Pinots since their first vintage in 2013. This is a cool site with the fruit usually picked around mid-April before a natural yeast fermentation and using a small portion (usually around 15%) of whole bunches. Very little mew oak is used and this alluring and persistent wine has red and black fruits together with a touch of spice.

Paul (he’s English) and Gilli (she’s from Brisbane) Lipscombe met in England in 2004 before embarking on a wine journey that would take them from the Languedoc in the south of France to Oregon in the US, New Zealand and Margaret River in WA before arriving in Tasmania’s Huon Valley in 2010. It didn’t take them long to settle down and they soon purchased the dilapidated Huon Valley vineyard which they have slowly transformed into one of Tassie’s shining jewels making a string of pure, finely crafted and highly sought after wines. Along the way, they have also found the time to make nine vintages of nearby Home Hill’s award-winning wines as well as assisting Jim and Daisy Chatto in the early days of their own exciting project in the Huon Valley!
