SAVATERRE Frere Cadet Chardonnay, Beechworth 2023 Bottle
About this wine
Savaterre Frère Cadet Chardonnay, Beechworth
Saveterre’s Frère Cadet—French for ‘younger brother’—is the only wine not made from estate grown fruit. Instead, it’s sourced from a younger, higher cropping site next door to Giaconda. Frère Cadet receives the same treatment as the estate wines however the vineyard is conventionally farmed. Winemaker Keppell Smith wants you to ‘enjoy this wine on occasions when Grand Cru would not be appropriate.’
Savaterre’s winemaking is light touch, and more or less uniform across varieties. Wild yeasts, basket presses, and lees ageing are employed before the wines are matured for up to 18 months in specially imported French oak, followed by another 6 months in bottle prior to release.
Savaterre is the passion project of winemaker, and co-owner, Keppell Smith. The 40ha property—8ha planted to chardonnay, pinot noir, shiraz, and sagrantino—is organically farmed, with viticulture, and winemaking, inspired by Old World, Burgundian practices.
