SAVATERRE Pinot Noir, Beechworth 2021 Bottle
About this wine
Savaterre Pinot Noir, Beechworth
If it weren’t for their superstar chardonnay, Saveterre’s pinot noir would confidently play the role of flagship wine. Outstanding site selection, and minimal intervention winemaking, make for a pinot noir of satisfying complexity, prodigious length, and charming flavour.
Savaterre’s winemaking is light touch, and more or less uniform across varieties. Wild yeasts, basket presses, and lees ageing are employed before the wines are matured for up to 18 months in specially imported French oak, followed by another 6 months in bottle prior to release.
Savaterre is the passion project of winemaker, and co-owner, Keppell Smith. The 40ha property—8ha planted to chardonnay, pinot noir, shiraz, and sagrantino—is organically farmed, with viticulture, and winemaking, inspired by Old World, Burgundian practices.

Expert Review
Gary Walsh
Keppel Smith just popped around to taste some wines with me. He’s a good fellow, quite chatty and jovial too.
Earthy, cherry, spice, dried rose and liquorice root, quite exotic with maybe, and don’t mind me, something of a quality Nebbiolo character about it. Dark cherry and spice, richness here and a little earthy, some blood orange, a light chew to supple powdery tannin, some high cocoa dark chocolate in the mix, and intriguing autumnal tones. Length is excellent. It really blossoms with time in glass, revealing more layers and complexity, yet what I like most is that it’s a wine of distinct character and personality. A very strong release.
95+ points.
