About this wine

Serrat Close Planted Shiraz Viognier, Yarra Valley

Tom and Nadège Carson established Serrat near Yarra Glen with a single-minded approach to viticulture. Planted at 8,800 vines per hectare, four times the Australian average, each vine carries just a few bunches to yield roughly one bottle. The Shiraz block blends heritage Best's Old Block and Barossa clones, co-fermented with a splash of Viognier sourced from historic Condrieu lineage.

In the winery, gentle processing and maturation in large French oak puncheons allow site and variety to take precedence over wood. Co-fermenting the white grape alongside the red elevates the perfume, yielding a wine defined by detail rather than raw weight.

Expect a nose of dark cherry, blackberry, black pepper and a lifted violet fragrance from the Viognier. The palate delivers concentrated blue and black fruits bound by ultra-fine, silky tannins and a lingering savoury, spicy edge.

ABOUT THE WINERY
Serrat

Serrat

Serrat is the boutique family label of renowned winemaker Tom Carson and his wife Nadège. Located near the township of Yarra Glen in the Yarra Valley, their small vineyard holdings consist of 0.8ha each of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, 0.4ha of Shiraz, and a small amount of Viognier. Serrat is a Catalonian word meaning close-planting and Serrat’s vineyard is planted to 8800 vines per hectare, four times more than the average Australian density. Highly labour intensive, each vine grows enough grapes for about one bottle of wine a year.
