This release is clean, fruit-driven and attractively textured. It tastes of passionfruit, apple and general tropical fruits, though in truth it tastes seamless. Intensity of fruit flavour seems up a little here, without anything being too overt. Accordingly it feels grapey in the mouth, and tastes the goods, in an uncomplicated way.

One of Australia’s most popular Sauvignons; this year’s vintage was the latest since the establishment of Shaw + Smith in 1989, and the wine is little lower in alcohol than usual.
No shortage of flavour here: despite the late ripening and cool vintage, the wine still has tropical characters, lots of nettle and warm citrus, and good textural, pulpy weight on the tongue. If anything, though, it feels like it lacks the complexity and verve of previous years at the moment (the qualities that set this apart from other Aussie Sauvignons), but that may build in bottle over time. This is only the second 2023 vintage I have tasted in bottle—perhaps not relevant, but it's an indicator that the year is moving on with pace. Leading with juniper and cassis, the 2023 Sauvignon Blanc is fresh and pert, with bright fruit and fine, chalky phenolics. I really like this wine, but then again, everyone in Australia really likes this wine. Every single year it delivers this experience of reliably good drinking. Famous for a reason. 12.% alcohol, sealed under screw cap. Drink 2023-2026.
