Spinifex La Maline Shiraz Viognier, Eden Valley

Spinifex is a benchmark for modern Barossa winemaking, with La Maline serving as their flagship expression of the Eden Valley. Magali Gely and Peter Schell source fruit from high-altitude vineyards where the cooler climate and rocky soils produce Shiraz with distinct aromatic lift. This wine follows the northern Rhône tradition of co-fermenting a small percentage of Viognier with Shiraz, a technique that stabilises colour and enhances the floral profile.

The winemaking focuses on minimal intervention. Whole-bunch fermentation is utilised to build structural complexity, while maturation takes place in seasoned French oak puncheons. This avoids heavy wood influence, ensuring the fruit and site remains the primary focus.

The nose offers scents of blackberry, cracked pepper, and violet. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and savory. Flavours of dark plum and olive tapenade are supported by fine tannins and a slate-like acidity. It is a sophisticated, cool-climate Shiraz that values poise and longevity.
