Huon Hooke
Very deep, concentrated red-purple colour, sawn-timber and black fruit aromas well integrated on the nose, laced with licorice and a fumy alcohol-vapour note. It's full bodied and bold with ample, slightly chewy/oaky tannins, the palate big and powerful, long and firm at the finish. This will come into its own with a few years' cellaring.

The other half of the collaboration between Australian Formula 1 racing driver, Daniel Ricciardo, and St Hugo Chief Winemaker, Peter Munro, this is a cracking Shiraz. Give it front spot on the starting grid. As much as I enjoyed their Cabernet, for me, this is the pick. A vibrant deep purple, it shows a dazzling colour. The nose is plush but with good intensity. The aromas move through chocolate, mulberries, black cherries, bay leaves and dried herbs – ripe, juicy and very more-ish. Cashmere-like, fine tannins, good balance and excellent length, the intensity is maintained for the full journey with cherry and chocolate persisting on the palate. Lots to love here and it should continue to drink beautifully for ten to fifteen years.

It’s a super soft, super slippery, smooth-hearted wine with vanilla-cream, plum, musk and mint characters flowing freely and agreeably through the palate. There’s a gentle hit of red liquorice here too, and some warmth, with fine-grained tannin that has almost completely melted into the fruit. It’s a pretty damn easy wine to drink, it has to be said.
