James Halliday
The colour (as is usual) is not strong, but the hue is good; an elegant medium-bodied, finely boned and structured wine; more to do with what it does not say than what it does, ie moderate alcohol and restrained oak. For all that, this is one of the great wines for classicists. All the vines were planted in 1860, and there has been no replacement of dead vines with young vines, not even using cuttings from the old; 275 dozen made.
96 points, Wine Companion (1/2007).

Deep ruby. Complex, spicy aromas of kirsch, black raspberry, grilled meat, anise, cigar box and fresh rose. Rich and full in flavour but firmly structured too, with solid tannins supporting ripe cherry and plum fruit and suggestions of cured tobacco, herbs and espresso coming up on the back. Impressively long and palate-staining. I love this for its old-school combination of fruit and earth qualities.
93 points, Vinous.
