TENUTA DELL'ORNELLAIA Massetino, Toscana IGT 2022 Bottle
About this wine
Tenuta Dell'Ornellaia Massetino, Toscana IGT
Massetino is the second wine of Masseto, made from Merlot with a small proportion of Cabernet Franc. It was first released in 2017 to offer earlier access to the style of its flagship sibling while maintaining a high level of site and cellar selection. Grapes are sourced from younger parcels of the Masseto vineyard and nearby plots with similar clay soils. Fermentation occurs in a combination of concrete and oak, with gentle extraction and extended maceration. The wine matures in French oak barriques—partly new—for around 15 months, followed by further time in bottle. Each vintage shows dark cherry, plum and dried herb with mineral grip and a clear line of acidity. It’s structured but more open in youth than Masseto, while still built to age. Massetino is made in minimal quantities and shares the same attention to detail, elevating it beyond a typical second label.

Founded in 1981 by Lodovico Antinori and named after the grove of flowering ash trees that surround the winery, the estate over looks the Tyrrhenian Sea with views stretching to islands of the Tuscan Archipelago and as far as Corsica. Sitting adjacent Tenuta San Guido (producer of Sassicaia) this is one of the estates that helped put Bolgehri on the map, along with Lodovico’s older brother’s Solaia and Tiganello, as well as Sassicaia. There are 3 wines in the range, the flagship Ornellaia; its second label, Le Serre Nuove; and its entry-level gem, Le Volte.
