About this wine
Tyrell’s 4 Acres Shiraz, Hunter Valley
Tyrell’s 4 Acres Shiraz comes from the pioneering estate’s Sacred Sites range, heroing singular vineyards that best express the unique terroir of the Hunter and Tyrell’s incredible holdings. 4 Acres is the oldest block on the Ashmans property. A reserve wine, it is only produced in top vintages.
Fruit is handpicked and sorted, before fermentation with 15% whole bunches. It is then matured for 14 months in a two-year-old Stockinger oak cask. Tyrell’s describe the 4 Acres as one of the most distinctive Shiraz wines in Australia, an evocative illustration of the singularity of Hunter Valley Shiraz. Bright, lifted, and energetic, red fruit and spice perfume the wine. A true Hunter Valley ‘Burgundy’ style, it is medium-bodied with fine tannins, a fruit-forward wine with great length, complexity, and surprising freshness.

You really want to drink this right away! Sliced strawberries and cherries with some light spice like nutmeg. Subtle light earth. Tannins melt into the wine. All there. Hints of spices and dried flowers. Some whole berry fermentation. So delicious. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Planted in 1879, and still open for business. Pretty much always my favourite red wine from Tyrrell’s because it’s so light, and so specific. 3,920 bottles produced. Maybe 2021 is a little like 2013 x 2009 in character? Both are vintages marked by freshness and understated charm. And both of those years have delivered most excellent wines with considered cellaring. Or something like that. I like to make comments that make me seem much smarter than I actually am.
Perfumed, red cherry, raspberry, fair bit of spice, iron filings and clay. Fine, light to medium-bodied, clarity and purity, such clean acid drive through the wine, finish is all violet and crisp red fruits, and it’s very long. Blink and you’ll miss it now, but wait! This is a superb fine-boned edition of 4A, and one to put in the cellar for at least a decade. It will flesh out and spread its wings. I love it.
