About this wine
William Downie and Ata Rangi Upgrade offer - Save over 30%
The William Downie Cathedral Pinot Noir 2023 (RRP $30) is ‘that’ wine. You know the one. That wine you talk about because you know it hits the mark every vintage. That wine that scores high on quality, finesse and value. That wine that is made by a master of the art of pinot who wants to produce bottles for people who want to enjoy rather than merely appreciate a fine glass. That wine is Bill Dowie’s Cathedral. Hands down, it is one of our best-selling wines (that includes the loyal following from the team at LANGTONS), and a lot of that comes down to loyal and thirsty reorders. Forget the rotation! This is your house red at home.
Our Upgrade offers, as you will know by now, take a dozen no-brainer, high-quality wines and we upgrade some bottles (two in this case) to a very fine and cellarable. IN this pinot pack, we have taken two of the above and upgraded them to Ata Rangi Pinot Noir Martinborough 2020 (RRP $120). This pinot is made in small quantities by star winemaker Helen Masters, a stone’s throw from the postcard town from Martinborough. Kiwi grand cru pinot and no mistake, the 2020 vintage sports two 98-point reviews from Bob Campbell MW and James Sucking, the latter awarding the Ata Rangi the No. 1 spot in his Top Wines of New Zealand in 2022. This is one of the best pinots in this part of the world and we include Australia in that.
In this 12-bottle pack, you’ll find:
10 x William Downie Cathedral Pinot Noir 2023 (RRP $30)
2 x Ata Rangi Pinot Noir Martinborough 2020 (RRP $120)

A beautiful nose of sliced strawberries, crushed cherries, violets, grated nutmeg and a hint of white pepper. Some hibiscus, too. Supremely vibrant and perfumed with fine tannins that run the length of the medium-bodied palate. Textural. Ground spice and fresh fruit are intertwined, providing wonderful depth and complexity. So long as well. Seamless balance. Superb. Sustainable. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Concentrated, complex pinot noir with cassis, blackberry, dark cherry, violet, wood smoke and savoury/dried herb flavours. Accessible now but with a proven history of ageing gracefully. Elegant wine with impressive power.

he 2020 Pinot Noir reminds me of walking into a cathedral - that quiet, cool hush that falls as you walk through its doors. This is harmonious, supple, unshowy and unforced. Hailing from old vines and delicately textured despite the abundance of fruit concentration. Refined tannins with the finest of gravelly textures, akin to licking a stone. Scented yet restrained, with a fragrance of sweet red fruit, tea leaf and cedar spices with persistent acidity that carries it. Very complete and already approachable.
