About this wine
WINE BY FARR Shiraz, Geelong
Wine by Farr Shiraz is a benchmark for cool-climate Australian Shiraz, crafted from the original By Farr vineyard planted in 1994 on a north-facing slope with red volcanic, limestone, and deep-set sandstone soils. The wine is hand-picked and co-fermented with 2–4% Viognier, with 20% whole bunches included in fermentation, resulting in lifted aromas of blueberry, spice, cola, dried flowers, and subtle nutmeg oak, alongside a palate that is mid-weight, bright, and lively, marked by purity, poise, and silky tannins. Aged for 18 months in French oak (20% new), it offers a powerful yet elegant expression, balancing intensity with elegance and a long, harmonious finish.

Expert Review
Campbell Mattinson
Shiraz certainly enjoyed the 2022 conditions at By Farr. Grown on vines that have just (in 2024) turned 30-year-old.
I’m often asked who makes the best shiraz in Australia. I always include By Farr in my answer. This 2022 release continues an incredible run of quality shiraz from this estate. The pepper spice and mezcal notes here are clear, as is the pure, sound, silken deliciousness of the fruit, though ultimately it’s the length of the palate that really distinguishes it. This wine is sweet, savoury, nutty and more, the Campari-like herb notes of the aftertaste a beautiful way to exit.
