Well, I probably should have tasted this alongside the Yeringberg Yeringberg from the same vintage, though timing/chaos prevented that. I reckon this is the better wine for me, because it has a bit less oak, and more perfume and finesse. I could be wrong. It’s from 1999 plantings.
Intense small berried black and red fruits, quite some violet perfume, pencils and tobacco, perhaps a little aniseed. It’s medium-bodied, quite ferrous and pencilly, the old liquid ‘mineral’ feel that great Cabernet often sports, compact and fine-grained tannin grip, freshness and excellent length, some redcurrant peeking through in the aftertaste along with some more savoury/earthy character. Beautiful wine. So good.

Just the third straight cabernet made, and from grapes planted in '99. A deepish bright crimson purple. A touch more closed than the Yeringberg blend, but still with a lovely core of dark fruits, together with cedar, violets and a hint of iodine on the perfumed and captivating bouquet. The medium-bodied and firmly structured palate is beautifully balanced but with those, firm, fine-grained tannins, this will require some patience to fulfil its potential.
