ABOUT THE WINERY
Alkoomi Frankland River
Langton’s Selections Alkoomi Blackbutt Cabernet blend, Alkoomi Jarrah Shiraz Alkoomi takes its name from the local aboriginal language meaning “a place we choose”. The original vineyard was planted in 1971 by Merv and Judy Lange. This family owned winery and vineyard has expanded considerably over the last 30 years. Located 80 kilometres inland and in the emerging Frankland River sub region of the Lowe Great Southern, the 255 acre vineyard represents one of the largest family holdings in Western Australia. The standard Riesling has attracted plenty of interest in the primary wine markets and is considered an excellent foil to the Rieslings of the Clare Valley in South Australia. Alkoomi’s Blackbutt Cabernet blend (named after a variety of Eucalypt tree) is matured for approximately 18 months in new French oak. The wine is a ‘best of vintage’ blend and as a result comprises an alternating encepagement. On track record Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc generally are the dominant varieties with varying proportions of Malbec and Merlot to bring complexity and further richness. Blackbutt has established an impressive following on the secondary wine market in recent years. The wine is powerfully built with strong cassis, dark chocolate/berry aromas with savoury oak nuances, deep set flavours and ripe textured tannins. The Jarrah Shiraz (also named after a variety of Eucalypt) derives from 30+ year old vines and is made in the traditional Australian fashion using open fermenters. It is matured for 18 months in approximately 50% new and old French oak. It is a well concentrated wine with redcurrant, plum savoury smoky aromas and soft but plush chocolaty tannins. Alkoomi also produces a barrel fermented Semillon style called Wandoo which does not have much of a presence on the secondary wine market. Alkoomi’s ‘icon’ red wines are well packaged and fall into the emerging category of ultra-fine wine. Andrew Caillard MW, Langton's
