Of course, you are! First, let’s talk about the Domaine Clarendon BDX 2016. This is the first vintage of this Bordeaux blend (hence the name) of estate-grown Blewitt Springs cabernet sauvignon and merlot. They aimed for a ‘good claret’ here and hit the bullseye. Cassis, chocolate, bay leaf and cedar, age showing plenty of mocha and a slight hint of heady cigar box. Good claret and great value but we are making this all the more appealing by swapping one of the six bottles and replacing it with a Penfolds St Henri SA 2019 (RRP $135). A LANGTONS Classification legend, the aim for St Henri was to be Grange with old French oak (more reminiscent of the Rhône) which is why it is known around these parts as Grange ‘au naturel’. It is mostly French oak and large format, too, to let the 100% premium SA shiraz shine. It doesn’t shout like Grange but speaks with quiet confidence.
