Mid-depth yellow-straw hue with ultra-fine bead. Opens beautifully with toasted brioche, chalky aromas. Powerful and majestic with great depth and concentration displaying lemon, white nectarine and yellow honey with hints of roasted almonds and buttered brioche. The underlying chalky acidity carries through to the finish, offering extraordinary precision, line and length. Magnificent. Drink now-2032+

A suitably monumental wine for a monumental man in most vintages, here scaling the peak of magnificence, the 14th release since 1975. It is predominantly Pinot Noir (Tom Stevenson speculates 70-80%), and is 100% Grand Cru. Straw-coloured, it brings another dimension of flavour, texture, length and depth into play; still tightly wound up after 10 years on tirage, fruit, honey and citrussy acidity are folded together in perfect balance. If you want to cellar one of the greatest champagnes of the present day, this should be at the head of your shopping list.

Only produced in the very best vintage years Pol Roger’s Winston Churchill is sourced exclusively from Grand Cru Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyards with the Pinot being the dominate variety in the blend. This magnificent Champagne gets off to the perfect start pouring with a generous white frothy mousse which once dissipated reveals a pale straw gold base wine colour. It also possesses one of the finest beads we’ve seen and shows exceptional persistence. Fresh and lively, the nose conjures up classic Champagne aromatics of citrus overlaid by baked bread, yeast lees and toasty scents finishing with subtle cashew and brioche notes. Elegant and refined yet with an underlying richness, the palate features flavours of brioche, yeast lees and citrus with a subtle toast component also present followed by some light cashew on the back palate. Creamy, finishing refreshingly crisp and dry with a very long aftertaste of brioche, yeast lees, toast, cashew and light citrus.

...underlines just how great the 2002 vintage is for Champagne. It’s the last of the great cuvée Champagnes to be released on the market following Salon a few months earlier, and I think it is one of the best ever from Pol Roger. The 2002 Sir Winston shows surreal aromas of dried apples, cream, mangos, and ginger that follow through to a full palate with a velvety texture and a lively finish. It opens with air, which suggests decanting. (Yes. You can decant Champagne!) It's extremely enjoyable to drink now, unlike a number of the top 2002 Champagnes at the moment that still need more bottle age. Don't miss this one if you love Pol Roger. It's a classic.
